Joel S. Goldsmith The Only Freedom

The Only Freedom reveals the possibility of attaining a state of permanent freedom. It is not the freedom we experience when we recover from some disease, for in that state we always know or expect that some other ailment can afflict us. It is not the freedom from lack that a wonderful new job or large inheritance may bring, for these also can fail us. The freedom described in The Only Freedom is a freedom already within us, but which can be reached only through the discipline of knowing the truth – the truth about God, man, and the nature of error – and standing firmly in the principles behind these truths. As Goldsmith says, “If we are not abiding in the Word and letting the Word abide in us, all the evils of this world can come near our dwelling place.”Throughout this book Goldsmith shows us how to find “the liberty of the sons of God” within ourselves. He says that it may not be easy, but that freedom and fulfillment will be the end result: “Wherever there is a realization of God, man is given his freedom, not only spiritual freedom, but a spiritual freedom which becomes evident as physical, mental, moral and financial freedom.”[Note: The Only Freedom is the collection of the 1981 Infinite Way Letters.]

On Freedom

In this tenth volume of the highly respected Boston University Studies in Philosophy and Religion series, contributors explore new approaches to the role of freedom in the contemporary world. It is clear that the idea of freedom has progressed with autonomous selfhood. But it is not yet evident how freedom is to be understood or promoted in a context where economic, political, cultural, and religious issues demand both pluralism and globalization. The essays consider three major areas of the debate. The first group of essays is concerned with the relation of Christian thought to freedom in the post-Christian age. Philosophical reconstructions of the idea of freedom are the focus of Part II, which investigates how the past and present can be used to create a new idea of freedom. Part III explores the possibility that individual selves are no more autonomous that they are social and asks the question: "What can we learn about the freedom of the self from contemporary social philosophies like Marxism and feminism and the unprecedented phenomenon of manmade mass death?"Contributors: Nicholas Lash, Jürgen Moltmann, David W. Tracy, and Robert C. Neville on Theologies of Freedom; John E. Smith, Frithof Bergmann, James R. Langford, and J.N. Mohanty on Philosophies of Freedom; Louis Dupré, Ruth L. Smith, and Edith Wyschogrod on Freedom in Society.

Haig A. E. Darakjian The Freedom of the Will According to Scriptures

The seeming inconsistency between God's sovereignty and human freedom has plagued Christian minds for many years. If God is in control of everything, how can human beings have freedom? If human beings are free, how can God be in control of their decisions? According to Haig Darakjian, this problem arises out of a libertarian definition of freedom that is simply assumed without being tested by scripture. So, Darakjian sets off to critique the idea of libertarian freedom based on concepts taught by God in his Word. He addresses the two major arguments usually made in favor of libertarian freedom - arguments from moral responsibility and human dignity. Then, he goes on to evaluate the impact of libertarian freedom on basic biblical doctrines and the Christian life. As he finds inconsistencies between libertarian freedom and scripture, he argues for the adoption of an alternate definition of freedom - the freedom of inclination. Darakjian claims that an "inclinationist" view of freedom is not only more consistent with the scriptures, but it also resolves the seeming inconsistency between God's sovereignty and human freedom.

I have been both an interim minister and what is called a regular, installed minister. Without a doubt in my mind, I say that the interim minister has much more freedom than the regular, installed minister. In Freedom and Interim Ministry: 12 Freedoms of the Interim, I show how the interim minister has more freedom than the regular minister.

J. Melvin Woody Freedom's Embrace

To be free is to escape all limitations and obstacles--or so we think at first. But if we probe further, we discover that freedom embraces its own necessities, a set of conditions without which it could not exist. Freedom' Embrace explores these necessities of freedom.J. Melvin Woody surveys competing conceptions of freedom and traces debates about the nature and reality of freedom to confusions about knowledge, humanity, and nature that are rooted in some of the most fundamental assumptions of modern Western thought. The preemption of freedom as an exclusively human privilege with all nature relegated to mechanical necessity is a fatal error that renders both humanity and nature equally unintelligible. What distinguishes human beings from other animals is not freedom but the use of symbols, which vastly extends the range of available options and enables us to envision freedom as an ideal by which customary institutions and norms may be judged and transformed.By carefully surveying its necessary conditions and limitations, Woody reconciles the salient competing conceptions of freedom and weaves them together into a richer and broader theory that resolves old controversies and opens the way toward an ethics of freedom that can meet the challenges of relativism and nihilism that arise from recognizing the historicity and malleability of culture.
