Abdeljalil Gattal Segmentation-Verification for Handwritten Digit Recognition

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, National Higher School Of Computer Engineering, language: English, abstract: Automatic reading of digit fields from an image document has been proposed in several applications such as bank checks, postal code and forms. In this context, two main problems occur when attempting to design a handwritten digit string recognition system. The first problem is the link between adjacent digits, which can be naturally spaced, overlapped or/and connected. The second problem is the unknown length of the digit string, which is not carefully written by people in real-life situations. In this thesis, SVM-based segmentation-verification system for segmenting two connected handwritten digits using the oriented sliding window is proposed. It employs a segmentation-verification system using conjointly the oriented sliding window and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers. Experimental results showed that the proposed system is more appropriate for segmenting simple and multiple connections. Its main advantage lays in the use few rules for finding the optimal segmentation path. Hence, the proposed approach constitutes a tradeoff between the correct segmentation and the number of the segmentation cuts. Thereafter, we propose a new design of a handwritten digit string recognition system based on the explicit approach for the unknown-length digit strings. Three methods are combined according the link of ad...

Adebimpe Azeez Ayodeji Influence of Brain MRI Segmentation Techniques on Eeg Source Analysis

This study investigates influence of brain MR segmentation techniques and implements a framework in Python for a uniform interface to the three different automated segmentation software tools (SPM,FSL and FreeSurfer) in order to be able to compare them consistently. This is done by using the Nipype (Neuroimaging in Python, Pipelines and Interfaces) which provides a uniform interface to these neuroimaging software tools. In addition, the tissue probability maps, masks and surfaces that are required for the head model construction are generated with this framework. The source reconstruction results with the head models constructed with different segmentation tools are evaluated based on the distance error from the source location to the lesion in the post-operative MR images. The SPM head models produced lowest distances error compared to the FSL and the FreeSurfer head models for two patients.

Kezia Joseph Mosiganti Texture based Segmentation Approches for Medical Images

Over the last few years, the atomization of medical diagnosis has increased exponentially. One of the most critical and first step of image analysis is segmentation. The segmentation results play a crucial and critical role in image analysis, such as representation, feature measurement, description, and even in classification and interpretation. The present study proposed various innovative segmentation methods for medical images. The proposed segmentation methods are based on the concepts derived from combinations of morphology, Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT), Stationary Wavelet Transform(SWT), edge filters, thresholding and texture based methods. The advantages of morphological methods are Noise filtering, Skeletonizing, Thickening, Object marking, Shape simplification, Thinning, Convex hull, Segmenting objects from background, Quantitative description of objects (projections, area, perimeter). In This book several segmentation methods on tuberculosis(TB) images were discussed, TB is one of the chronic bacterial infection, which causes more deaths worldwide than any other infectious disease.

Malcolm McDonald Market Segmentation. How to Do It and Profit from

Market Segmentation: How to do it and how to profit from it, revised and updated 4th Edition is the only book that spells out a totally dispassionate, systematic process for arriving at genuine, needs-based segments that can enable organizations to escape from the dreay, miserable, downward pricing spiral which results from getting market segmentation wrong. Nothing in business works unless markets are correctly defined, mapped, quantified and segmented. Why else have hundreds of billions of dollars been wasted on excellent initiatives such as TQM, BPR, Balanced Scorecards, Six Sigma, Knolwedge Management, Innovation, Relationship Marketing and, latterly, CRM? The answer, of course, is because of a structured approach to market segmentation. Market Segmentation: How to do it and how to profit from it, revised and updated 4th Edition provides a structured, no-nonsense approach to getting market segmentation right. It is an essential text for professionals and students based on a wealth of practical experience and packed with examples and easily used checklists.

Jan Horacek Segmentation and Density Estimation in Femur

We present a novel method for a femoral head segmentation and a density measurement. Our approach is based on a semi-automatical femoral head segmentation from a CT dataset based on finding an optimal path through the axial slices transformed to polar coordinates. The cost function itself is based on a combination of corticallis properties, mostly the directional behavior of the 3D gradients and their size in 2D slices, where they form typical "channels". The final volume is computed using filling and morphological algorithms and its properties are further measured. The final implementation was experimentally validated on the radiology department of the Bulovka hospital and allows a radiologist to intuitively and accurately estimate the femoral head density in approximately 1 to 3 minutes.

Lina Gundelwein 3D segmentation and boundary completion using subjective surface method

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Mathematics - Applied Mathematics, grade: 1,0, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Angewandte Mathematik III), language: English, abstract: Segmentation is used to locate boundaries of an object in a given image. Finding those boundaries is important e.g. for visualizing three dimensional objects and measuring their surface or volume. Ideally, the boundaries coincide with the edges seen in the image. However, due to noise, partly missing information or in case of subjective contours the edges can be irregular and discontinuous. The human brain is able to perform visual completion that is to say it can in many cases complete those interrupted boundaries by filling in the missing gaps. Simple segmentation methods fail to do so, whereas the subjective surface method succeeds by sharpening the surface around the edges and connecting segmented boundaries across the gaps. Michael Fried is using finite elements with the subjective surface method resulting in an algorithm that detects interrupted boundaries as well as subjective contours in 2D. As an extension of Michael Fried's work, the algorithm presented in this thesis is able to complete missing boundary segments in 3D, smooth out the contours and perform modal completion.

Taichang Chen Transformations and Challenges of C Urban Labour Market

China has experienced dramatic changes since its economic reform programme in 1978, and it is in the process of creating a functioning urban labour market that rewards workers on the basis of human capital. A 2002 nationally representative household survey is used to investigate how far a competitive urban labour market China has been created. We find evidence of both segmentation and competition between urban residents and migrants which is consistent with previous studies. In addition, there is evidence that segmentation exists across sectors for urban residents, with those currently working in government agencies and institutions being the highest-paid tier, followed by state-owned enterprises, private-invested enterprises, those in urban collective enterprises and self-employment are considered as the lowest-paid tier. Although we do not find evidence of segmentation among migrants, our data suggest that migrants are blocked from getting jobs in the 'upper-tier' for urban residents, and thus are forced to engage in self-employment. Therefore, the urban labour market is segmented into multi-tier and is still in a transition stage.

Harald Galda Development of a segmentation method for dermoscopic images based on color clustering

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2003 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: Pass grade, Kobe University (Faculty of Engineering, Department of Computer & Systems Engineering, Kitamura Lab), course: Doctor Course Information and Media Science, 41 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Malignant melanoma is a very dangerous kind of skin cancer. In order to treat malignant melanoma it must be detected as early as possible. However, when looking at a malignant melanoma by the naked eye, it can be mistaken as a nevus (benign skin lesion). Therefore, dermatologists use a microscope that shows the pigmented structure of the skin. This microscope is called "dermoscope". An irregular overall structure, an irregular border and several colors indicate that a skin lesion is malignant. A homogeneous structure, a regular border and few colors indicate that a lesion is benign. However, even when using a dermoscope a melanoma can be mistaken as a nevus. Therefore it is desirable to analyze dermoscopic images by a computer in order to classify them as malignant or benign. Before a dermoscopic image is classified, usually the skin lesion border is extracted. For this purpose, previously developed methods segment the image into regions of the same color (color segmentation) or into regions that fulfill a homogeneity criterion (region based segmentation). Color segmentation can be done using fuzzy c-means. When applying fuzzy c-means, the num...

Market segmentation, dividing the market into submarkets, and branding products and services plays a major part in marketing activities.Globalization is one of words used nowadays to describe the convergence of cultures. Cultures are believed to move closer together as a result of increased travel, better communication methods and enhanced transportation opportunities. Companies try to anticipate this change by offering standardized products to a global audience. Cultural differences are a logical barrier to standardization of the marketing strategies on a global scale. However, even on a national scale, there are many different types of consumers, who need to be treated differently. Market segmentation plays a major part in marketing, as all marketing activties depend on precisely defined and carefully choosen market segments.

Srivani Pinneli Predicting the Perceived Interest of Object in Images

This book presents an algorithm that uses a "Bayesian probabilistic apprroach" to compute the perceived interest of objects in images. A set of likelihood functions were measured via a psychophysical experiment in which subjects rated the perceived visual interest of over 1100 objects in 300 images. These results were then used to determine the likelihood of perceived interest given various factors such as location, contrast, color, luminance, edge-strength and blur. These likelihood functions are used as part of a Bayesian formulation in which perceived interest is inferred based on the factors mentioned above. Our results demonstrate that our algorithm can perform well in predicting perceived interest. A block-based approach is also proposed which doesn't need segmentation and is fast- enough to be used in real-time applications.
